FREE TAX SERVICE HELPS ALBANY COUNTY RESIDENTS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF VALUABLE CREDITS
ACAP to Prepare Tax Returns for Qualifying Individuals

Albany, NY – January 23, 2012 - Albany Community Action Partnership (ACAP) has announced today the annual launch of its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), from January 23rd – April 6th 2012, which offers free tax return assistance to low- and moderate- income households — those households with 2011 incomes below $50,000.00.

ACAP’s IRS Certified VITA/TCE Volunteer Preparer will help individuals complete their income tax returns according to the current taxation laws and help with special credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.  In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, the program also offers free electronic filing (e-filing). Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper – even faster when tax refunds are deposited directly into one's bank account.

“Last year, over $210,000 in tax refunds were received by 131 customers through ACAP’s tax services via Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly,” said Kathleen Cloutier, ACAP’s Executive Director. “Clearly this is a valuable program which helps Albany residents keep much needed income and stay clear of ‘quick-refund’ businesses that prey upon those most in need.”

The program is available in partnership with the United Way of the Greater Capital Region CASH Coalition (see www.unitedwaygcr.org for other participating VITA locations). ACAP’s VITA location sites will be at their two outreach offices in Albany (333 Sheridan Avenue/ 518.463.3175) and Cohoes (20 White Street, Cohoes/518.237.9201) and runs January 23, 2012 – April 6, 2012, between 9am-3pm, by appointment only.  To schedule an appointment, please call 518.463.3175.
