The Children's Center at Family Court provides a safe environment for children and a place to play and learn while their parents are in Albany County Family Court. It gives the children an opportunity to escape the often adversarial atmosphere that can develop in Family Court and gives parents time to concentrate on their court matters.
The early childhood staff at the center help to make the families feel comfortable and are good listeners when parents are upset due to the situations that can occur during court appearances. The center has specific areas designated for painting, music, blocks, sand and water table, having snacks, taking naps, computers, and more.
The Children's Center participates in the statewide Literacy Initiative. Part of this program is that each child is given a book to read as they come into the center. The Center also helps the children and their families by connecting them to vital services such as Head Start; the WIC Program, Food Stamp Assistance, local area child care programs, lifeline telephone services, and many others.
The Children's Center received special assistance in 2005-2006 from a grant awarded to Albany Community Action Partnership by the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region, Inc.
This grant awarded special funding to the Children's Center program for the purposes of purchasing much-needed center supplies and equipment, as well as an abundance of educational materials beneficial to the children and families that receive care from the Children's Center while at Family Court. Many thanks go out to Ronald McDonald House Charities and their employees for their consideration and recognition of Albany County Opportunity and our Family Court Children's Center.
On average, the Family Court Children's Center provides care for over 1200 children each year. For more information on the Children's Center, contact:
